Influence of Acupuncture on Weight Regulation

OBESITY - Acupuncture, Insulin, Leptin, Weight Loss

A clinical study involving 40 obese women found that a brief course of acupuncture treatment (10 treatments in 5 weeks) may help to regulate weight due to its beneficial effects on hormones. Subjects received either true acupuncture or a sham (non-penetrating) treatment at acupuncture points: LI4, HT7, ST36, ST44 and SP6, bilaterally. Both groups had two sessions of 20 min/week for a total of 10 sessions. Serum insulin, leptin, plasma ghrelin and CCK levels were measured. Subjects in the acupuncture group experienced decreases in levels of insulin and leptin, increases in plasma ghrelin and CCK levels, decreases in BMI, and weight loss. These findings suggest that acupuncture may help to regulate weight due to its beneficial effects on hormones.
